Election of Lay Delegates to General and Jurisdictional Conferences

At its June 17-21, session, the Western North Carolina Annual Conference will elect delegates to represent the conference at the 2016 General Conference and Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference. The conference will elect 10 lay delegates to the General Conference; these will also represent the conference at the Jurisdictional Conference. An additional 10 lay delegates to the Jurisdictional Conference will be elected; these will also be reserve delegates to the General Conference.

The 2014 annual conference session approved a plan by which lay persons may offer themselves for consideration in the election. That process is available hereEach person so named will be assigned a voting number.  This year we will be using electronic balloting with hand-held devices to record choices.

If you are interested in offering yourself for consideration as a lay delegate to General and Jurisdictional Conference, please complete and send the items noted on this instruction sheet POSTMARKED NO LATER THAN MARCH 1. Email submissions should be received by March 1. The biographical statement, demographic data, and photograph will be compiled and eligible for download prior to annual conference. Read the directions carefully!  Delegate names and assigned numbers will be distributed to delegates at registration. Only eligible persons named on these forms will be listed on the numerical voting roster.

To be eligible for election, a lay person must be a member of a local church in this conference and have been a member of The United Methodist Church for at least two years preceding their election, and an active participant in The United Methodist Church for at least four years next preceding his or her election (¶ 36 of the Discipline). It is hoped that those who are nominated and elected will reflect the diversity of the annual conference.

There will be a commissioning act for all delegates elected during the Sunday worship service at annual conference on June 21, 2015.  Those elected will be expected to attend.  The delegation then meets multiple times throughout the year, usually on Saturdays, for preparation and education.

Please note: The 2016 General Conference will be held in Portland, Oregon, May 10-20, 2016; with travel, this will involve almost two weeks. The 2016 Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference will be held at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina, July 12-16, 2016. Delegates will be expected to commit those blocks of time to this important opportunity for service to the church.

Please feel free to contact the Conference Secretary if you have questions about this process.
